The Phonics for Reading series is intended to be an intervention program that provides explicit instruction in phonics as well as phonemic awareness, fluency and comprehension.
Phonics for Reading Second Level is designed to:
- Support already developed phonemic awareness skills through a blending and segmenting warm-up
- Assist students who need support in developing automaticity with advanced phonics skills
- Engage students in a systematic, explicit daily decoding routine which includes a phonemic awareness warm-up, letter sound association practice, word level reading practice, decodable text, and spelling
Students participating in Phonics for Reading Second Level have shown mastery of basic phonics skills and need support with advanced phonics (e.g., long vowel patterns, vowel teams, and r-controlled vowels).
Participants will develop an understanding of how the science of teaching reading is embedded into this program. Understanding how to interpret data for program placement and practicing delivering the lesson components are also key components of this training day.
This intervention program supports #3, #4, & #5 of the GELN Grades K to 3 Essentials Instructional Practices in Early Literacy.
