This year-long professional learning series is designed to build educator capacity in evidence-based spelling instruction across Michigan schools. The series is structured around seven modules that address assessment, scope and sequence, phonics-spelling connections, morphology, and implementation. Each module is designed for practical application, with an emphasis on tools and routines educators can use immediately in their classrooms.
This series is grounded in the Science of Reading and aligned with current best-practice frameworks, including IES Practice Guides and Michigan's literacy priorities. It is appropriate for general education teachers, reading specialists, instructional coaches, and curriculum leaders in grades K–6 (with targeted content for grades 3–5 in morphology and multisyllabic word work).
By the end of the series, participants will:
- Deepen their understanding of the science behind spelling development.
- Build skills in administering and interpreting spelling assessments, including spelling inventories and curriculum-based measures.
- Support educators in evaluating and implementing a high-quality spelling scope and sequence.
- Develop knowledge of morphology and multisyllabic word strategies applicable in grades 3–5 and beyond.
- Create systems for differentiation, progress monitoring, and sustainable schoolwide implementation.
