The Michigan Department of Education (MDE) and Michigan’s Multi-Tiered System of Supports Technical Assistance (MIMTSS-TA) Center are announcing that this year’s literacy symposium will be a multi-part virtual webinar series.
This webinar series, focusing on the how and why of literacy, will address the professional learning specific to the new K-12 Literacy and Dyslexia Laws (Public Act 146 and Public Act 147) and the importance of engaging literature.
This series, titled, “2025 Diversity in Literature Symposium: The How and Why of Literacy,” will begin in spring 2025. Five webinars are planned for the remainder of the 2024-25 school year. Registration and webinar dates will be shared soon. Please watch for updates in upcoming department memos.
Featuring local and national experts, this webinar series will be free to attendees, is tailored to K-12 educators and administrators, and includes topics such as:
- Defining Dyslexia.
- Identifying Characteristics and Consequences of Dyslexia.
- Structured Literacy Instruction.
- The Reading Brain.
- Selecting and Implementing Engaging Classroom Library Texts.

Overview
The Literacy Symposium is hosted in partnership between the Michigan Department and Education and the MiMTSS TA Center. It supports the Michigan Top 10 Strategic Education Plan, Goal 2 to improve early literacy achievement.
Throughout the day, participants will have the opportunity to engage in sessions aligning to the Science of Reading, which is a vast interdisciplinary body of scientifically-based research that helps inform how proficient reading and writing develops.
Symposium Objectives
- Gain an understanding of the latest research, promising practices, and critical issues related to the Science to Reading to connect with their existing practices.
- Learn about developing systems to support effective implementation.
- Expand learning of contextual implementation of practices.
- Acquire new knowledge and skills applicable to their specific role/position.
