Inequities abound in accessing and understanding written text meant to enhance student learning in core subjects at the secondary level. Inadequate word recognition skills, lack of background knowledge, and a limited vocabulary can make reading and comprehending challenging text difficult for many students. Teachers can respond to these issues by creating an environment where students feel included, supported, and equipped to engage in adolescent reading and writing by incorporating literacy supports that enhance comprehension of content-area text.
This session will focus on an evidence-based, before reading strategy that enhances instructional delivery and engagement in the classroom, thus fostering increased access, deeper learning, and understanding of the content-area text in a safe learning environment.
